The KiSel 10 Study
Coenzyme Q10 and selenium protect the heart:
Swedish cardiologist Urban Alehagen and his research team demonstrated more than 16 years ago that taking selenium and coenzyme Q10 supplements daily is good for the heart. The study, officially known as the KiSel-10 study, found that these nutrients reduced mortality from cardiovascular disease by more than 50%. At the time, the researchers were surprised by the results and did more research.
In four years, eleven additional examinations took place and 50,000 blood samples were processed. They found that the heart-protective effect among participants persisted after the end of the study. In the group that took 200 micrograms of selenium and 200 milligrams of coenzyme Q10 daily for four years, there were more than 40% fewer deaths from cardiovascular disease compared to the placebo group. The effect of the two nutrients was measured for the KiSel-10 study in 443 Swedish healthy men and women aged 70 to 88 years.
Discovered more positive effects:
In addition to reducing mortality from cardiovascular disease, the researchers saw during follow-up that long-term supplementation with selenium and coenzyme Q10 also had a positive effect on heart muscle function. In addition, several markers measured in relation to heart health improved. The researchers could see that the nutrients selenium and coenzyme Q10 enable the heart to pump more easily. There was also less trouble with thickening of the wall of the heart muscle, an effect that can damage the heart.
When it helps healthy people over the age of 70, it can also be good for people with heart problems. Simply because our heart needs nutrients. At least that's how I think about it.
