The KiSel 10 Study Coenzyme Q10 and selenium protect the heart: Swedish cardiologist Urban Alehagen and his research team demonstrated more than 16 years ago that taking selenium and coenzyme Q10 supplements daily is good for the heart. The study, officially known as the KiSel-10 study, found that these nutrients reduced mortality from cardiovascular disease by more than 50%. At the time, the researchers were surprised by the results and did more research. In four years, eleven additional examinations took place and 50,000 blood samples were processed. They found that the heart-protective effect among participants persisted after the end of the study. In the group that took 200 micrograms of selenium and 200 milligrams of coenzyme Q10 daily for four years, there were more than 40% fewer deaths from cardiovascular disease compared to the placebo group.
