When you have heart failure, the heart pumps the oxygen-rich blood insufficiently through the human body. Every organ in our body needs enough blood to do its job properly. When the heart doesn't pump enough blood, other organs get problems with this. Organs such as the kidneys (kidney failure) and the liver (liver congestion).
But our brain is also an organ, so in case of heart failure it also receives insufficient oxygen-rich blood and our brain cannot perform their work sufficiently. This can lead to memory loss, confusion and/or gloomy mood.
Unfortunately, I can relate this to myself. When we had been away with our family during the summer holidays and we looked back on this a few months later, I had to dig very deep to remember exactly what we had done and what our house or camping tent looked like. In most cases I couldn't remember. Now that I know I have heart failure, these puzzle pieces all fall into place. The same goes for a gloomy mood. I wouldn't say I was depressed, but a gloomy mood was definitely present.
When our heart becomes stronger again and regains its pumping power (EF), our organs will receive more oxygen-rich blood again. Which can be very important.
Yesterday (April 6) I had an echocardiogram. With this they can very well determine the pumping power (EF) of the heart. I haven't had a result yet yesterday, but it will come April 28th. Hopefully my heart's pumping power has improved. I feel better anyway.
